What is a Zygoma Implant?

What is a Zygoma Implant?

Tooth loss has profound effects not only on aesthetic appearance but also on the quality of daily life. Missing teeth can cause loss of self-confidence, inability to chew properly, digestive problems, speech difficulties and restrictions on social life. This situation negatively affects both the psychological and physical health of individuals.

Today, one of the most effective ways to compensate for missing teeth is implant treatment. Traditional implants make it possible to apply fixed dental prostheses thanks to titanium screws placed in the jawbone. However, this treatment is not suitable for every patient. Especially in patients with advanced maxillary erosion, standard implant applications may not be successfully performed due to insufficient bone volume.

This is where zygomatic implants, a special solution offered by modern dentistry, come into play. Unlike classic implants, zygomatic implants are placed in a denser and more solid bone known as the cheekbone (zygomatic bone). In this way, implant treatment becomes possible even in patients with advanced osteoporosis.

What is a Zygoma Implant?

Zygoma implants get their name from the bone in which they are placed, the “zygomatic bone”. The zygomatic bone is commonly known as the cheekbone and is one of the most solid and densely structured areas of the facial skeleton. This bone plays an important role in both shaping facial features and supporting the jaw and skull structure.

In traditional implant applications, titanium screws are placed directly into the jawbone. However, in some patients, especially in the upper jaw region, bone tissue may have seriously eroded due to long-term edentulism, osteoporosis or trauma. In such cases, treatment may not be possible or additional surgical procedures may be required because there is not enough bone height and thickness for classical implant applications.

Zygoma Implant

Zygoma implants are special implants developed for exactly such difficult cases. These implants are longer than traditional implants and are applied to patients with bone deficiency in the upper jaw by fixing them to the cheekbone. In this way, fixed prosthesis application becomes possible without the need for time-consuming and long-healing surgical interventions such as bone graft (bone powder addition) and sinus lift.

Thanks to zygoma implants, patients with advanced bone loss can also have functional and aesthetic teeth in a short time. This method both shortens the treatment period and rapidly increases the quality of life of patients.

Who is it Suitable For?

Zygoma implants offer an effective alternative, especially in cases where traditional implant treatments are inadequate. This method, which was specially developed for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw region, is successfully used in people who cannot receive standard implants for various reasons. The following patient groups are among the suitable candidates for zygoma implants:

  • Patients with advanced bone loss in the upper jaw:
The upper jaw bone may have become seriously thin due to long-term tooth loss, age-related bone loss, or various systemic diseases. Since there is not enough bone for classic implants in such cases, zygoma implants offer an ideal solution.
  • People who have previously had implant treatment but failed:
Failure of implant applications in the past may result in damage or loss of the jawbone. Zygoma implants are a new source of hope for patients who want to regain fixed teeth after such negative experiences.
  • Individuals who have experienced bone loss due to long-term use of removable dentures:
Long-term use of removable dentures such as dentures (palate) can cause pressure on the jawbone and melting over time. In these patients, bone loss caused by the use of dentures can be compensated with zygoma implants.
  • Patients who are not suitable for additional surgical procedures such as bone graft (bone powder application):
The general health status, age factor or chronic diseases of some patients may make surgical interventions such as bone grafts risky. Zygoma implants offer a permanent and fixed solution without the need for such procedures.
  • Individuals with time constraints who want to have fixed teeth in a short time:
Zygoma implants are a fast and effective solution for patients who want to keep the treatment period as short as possible due to work, social life or health reasons. In many cases, temporary or permanent fixed teeth can be applied shortly after the implants are placed.

Advantages of Zygoma Implants

Zygoma implants offer many important advantages over traditional implant methods, especially for patients with advanced bone loss in the upper jaw. One of the most striking aspects is that they do not require time-consuming and additional surgical interventions such as bone grafting; because these implants are placed directly into the cheekbone, which both speeds up and simplifies the treatment process. In most cases, a fixed temporary prosthesis can be applied on the same day, so the patient does not lose teeth after the procedure and can return to their daily lives in a short time.

The dense and solid nature of the zygomatic bone structure increases the success of the implant in adhering to the jawbone and ensures long-lasting, reliable results. In terms of aesthetics, fixed prostheses offer a structure that is very close to the appearance of natural teeth; this allows patients to smile with confidence, speak comfortably and eat in a functionally healthy way. All these features make zygoma implants both an effective and patient-friendly treatment option.

How is a Zygoma Implant Performed?

Zygoma implant application is usually performed under local anesthesia or sedation, and in some cases under general anesthesia. Before the procedure, detailed tomography images are taken from the patient and the density and structural suitability of the cheekbone are carefully evaluated. During the surgical stage, specially designed long implants are placed in the zygomatic bones at certain angles; temporary fixed dental prostheses are often applied in the same session to prevent the patient from being toothless after the procedure.

Zygoma implants generally offer a rapid healing process thanks to their attachment to the solid bone structure and permanent prostheses can be placed in approximately 3 to 6 months. After treatment, regular physician check-ups, good oral hygiene and compliance with the physician’s recommendations are of great importance for the implants to continue to function long-lastingly and without problems.
