What to Consider After Implant Treatment

What to Consider After Implant Treatment

Dental implants are one of the most preferred and most successful treatment methods today for functional and aesthetic completion of missing teeth. Implants, which offer the closest structure to natural teeth, both restore chewing function and significantly improve the patient’s smile aesthetics. However, this treatment method is not limited to the successful implementation of surgical intervention.

The long-term, trouble-free operation of implants is directly related to the experience of the doctor and the quality of the materials used, as well as the care that the patient will show after the treatment. Some basic rules that should be followed during the healing process that begins after the operation are of great importance for the implants to fuse with the bone in a healthy way (osseointegration) and to fulfill their function for a lifetime. Therefore, it is vital that patients undergoing implant treatment meticulously follow the doctor’s recommendations and pay utmost attention to oral hygiene.

Pay Attention to the First 24 Hours After Surgery

The first 24 hours after a dental implant operation are the most sensitive and careful phase of the healing process. Correct practices during this period directly affect the success of the treatment. It is necessary to pay particular attention to the following points:

Control Bleeding:
It is natural to experience mild bleeding after implant surgery. The gauze pad placed by your dentist is of great importance in stopping bleeding. You should hold this pad in place by biting firmly for at least 30 minutes. However, if bleeding lasts longer than expected or becomes more severe, you should consult your physician without delay.

Avoid Spitting and Pressure Movements:
The clot formed in the operation area is the basic building block of healing. For this reason, you should avoid all behaviors that may increase intraoral pressure, such as spitting, gargling, or drinking through a straw, during the first day. Otherwise, the clot may dislodge and healing may be delayed.

Cold Application (Ice Compress):
A cold compress application from outside is very effective in minimizing swelling and bruising that may occur on the face. Ice packs or cold gel pads wrapped in a clean cloth should be applied to the operation area at 15-minute intervals. However, direct contact should not be made with the skin, a thin cloth should definitely be placed between the skin and the compress.

Correct Sleeping Position:
You should make sure that your head is elevated during the first night’s rest. A semi-sitting position supported by a pillow will regulate blood circulation and reduce the risk of swelling and bleeding. Lying on a flat surface or upside down may increase such complications.

Nutritional Habits

The diet after the implant is one of the factors that directly affects healing. In the first days, soft and warm foods should be preferred and hard and hot foods should be avoided.

First Day: Liquid and soft foods (such as soup, yogurt, puree) should be consumed. However, care should be taken not to make it too hot.

Chewing: Avoid chewing with the area where the implant is placed. This prevents the implant from moving or damaging the surrounding tissues.

Alcohol and Smoking: Alcohol and smoking should be avoided especially in the first week. These substances delay healing and increase the risk of infection.

Attention Should Be Paid to Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is of great importance for the healing of the implanted area. However, care should be taken gently during oral care and the surgical area should not be damaged.

Brushing Teeth: Brushing should not be done for the first 24 hours. Afterwards, teeth can be brushed gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Special attention should be paid to the area around the implant.

Gargle: Antiseptic mouthwash products recommended by the physician can be used. However, excessive rinsing should not be done.

Rinsing with Salt Water: Gentle rinsing with warm salt water several times a day starting from the second day after surgery supports the healing of the wound.

Medication Use

Medications prescribed by your dentist are important to reduce the risk of infection and control pain.

Antibiotics: Antibiotics prescribed against the risk of infection should be used without interruption for the period recommended by the doctor.

Painkillers: Should be used when necessary, and the recommended dose should not be exceeded.

Regular Follow-up: Follow-up appointments should definitely be attended. These check-ups are important to see whether the tissues around the implant are healing healthily.

Physical Activity and Rest

The body needs rest during the healing process. Therefore, intense physical activities should be avoided.

Rest in the First Days: Avoid heavy exercises, bending or lifting heavy objects in the first few days.

Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising that may occur in the face area will pass within a few days. These symptoms are usually normal, but if severe pain and high fever occur, a doctor should be consulted.

Things to Consider in the Long Term

Implant treatment is not limited to surgery. In the long term, some habits may need to be changed:

  • Oral Care Routine: Brushing and flossing at least twice a day should be a habit.
  • Regular Dentist Checkup: The implant should be checked at least twice a year.
  • Clenching and Grinding: If there are habits such as clenching or grinding teeth, a night plate may be necessary. These habits can put pressure on the implant and cause damage.

The rules that need to be followed after implant treatment ensure that the healing process progresses healthily and that implants can be used for many years without any problems. Following the recommendations we have given, paying attention to oral hygiene, going to regular check-ups and maintaining healthy lifestyle habits directly affect the success of implant treatment. Remember, although implants are the closest structures to natural teeth, protecting their health is in your hands.
