What are Dental Braces?

Braces are an effective orthodontic treatment tool used to correct teeth and jaw structure. With developing technology and innovations in the field of orthodontics, braces play an important role in terms of aesthetics and functionality today. Braces not only align the teeth, but also improve chewing function and aim to achieve a more aesthetic smile.

One of the most important benefits of braces is that they increase the person’s overall oral health. Properly aligned teeth help prevent problems such as tooth decay and gum disease, while also optimizing chewing and speech functions. Therefore, braces are not only an aesthetic choice, but also necessary to maintain a healthy oral structure.

Braces are usually made of metal, ceramic or transparent materials. While metal braces are known for their durability, ceramic braces are less noticeable in terms of aesthetics. Transparent braces, on the other hand, allow users to undergo orthodontic treatment processes more discreetly. Their main purpose is to direct and correct the teeth to the desired position. This process is carried out in accordance with a personalized plan determined by the orthodontist.

Types of Braces

Braces are available in various types according to different needs and personal preferences:

  • Metal Braces: The most commonly used type of braces. They are attached to the teeth with durable metal brackets and wire. They are generally popular among children and teenagers because they provide effective correction.
  • Ceramic Braces: A good option for those who want to reduce the appearance of metal braces. Ceramic brackets are less noticeable because they are tooth-colored. However, they may require more maintenance because they are more delicate than metal braces.
  • Clear Braces: Clear braces, which have increased in popularity in recent years, offer an aesthetic option with their invisibility feature. Systems such as Invisalign provide correction using transparent plates specially produced for the patient’s teeth. These methods are ideal for individuals with aesthetic concerns.
  • Lingual Braces: These wires, placed on the back of the teeth, are invisible from the outside. However, they can be difficult in terms of application and adjustment and can cause discomfort in some people.

Braces Treatment Process?

Braces treatment is a journey consisting of several stages, starting with a comprehensive evaluation process. First, the orthodontist meticulously evaluates the condition of the patient’s teeth, jaw structure and general oral health. At this stage, a detailed analysis of the teeth and jaw structure is performed using x-rays and other imaging techniques. In light of the data obtained, the most appropriate treatment plan for the patient’s needs and expectations is created; this plan includes details on which type of braces will be used and how the treatment process will proceed.

Following the planning stage, braces are placed on the patient’s teeth on the specified date. While this procedure is usually painless, some patients may feel slight discomfort after being placed. After the braces are placed, it is necessary to visit the orthodontist at regular intervals for the effectiveness of the treatment process; during these check-ups, the braces are adjusted and the progress of the treatment process is observed. When the treatment is completed, the orthodontist usually recommends a retainer to help maintain the new positions of the teeth. A retainer is a permanent appliance that should be used to ensure that the teeth remain in the correct position and continue to support the patient’s smile and oral health.

Benefits of Using Braces

There are many important benefits of braces treatment. First of all, braces help to correct crooked teeth and achieve a straight smile, ensuring that the teeth are properly aligned; this plays a critical role in both aesthetic and functional terms. In addition, correct alignment of the teeth improves chewing function; while misaligned teeth can cause difficulties during chewing and digestive problems, straight teeth make these processes easier.

Using braces also positively affects oral health; properly aligned teeth make brushing and flossing easier, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, an aesthetically pleasing smile increases the individual’s self-confidence, and a beautiful smile obtained after braces treatment can lead to positive changes in social life. For these reasons, braces treatment offers important advantages in terms of both health and aesthetics.

Difficulties of Using Braces

There are some difficulties of using braces. These difficulties may vary from person to person, but they can be generally grouped under the following headings:

  • Pain and Discomfort: Some patients may experience pain and discomfort when braces are first placed and after the adjustment procedures. This is usually temporary, but it can be uncomfortable for some people.
  • Food Restrictions: Individuals who use braces must avoid certain hard and sticky foods. These foods can damage the braces or prevent the teeth from aligning properly.
  • Difficulty in Oral Care: Braces can make brushing and flossing difficult. Therefore, it is important to take extra care with oral hygiene.
  • Sensitivity of Teeth: Sensitivity in teeth may increase during treatment. You may feel discomfort when consuming cold, hot or sweet foods.

Braces Prices 2024

The cost of braces treatment varies depending on many factors. Factors such as treatment duration, type of braces used, orthodontist’s level of expertise and regional price differences are factors that affect the cost. In general, braces treatment may be covered by orthodontic insurance, but this depends on the insurance plan.

To get clear information about the cost, it would be best to meet with the orthodontist and create a detailed treatment plan. In addition, some clinics offer payment plans to ease the financial burden.
